man git-cherry-pick might help. It basically means picking one commit
off another branch, and having it be correctly applied to the current
branch through a possible 3-way merge if necessary.

Do you have a .cvsrc? Try adding a "update -dP" line (and a "checkout
-P"), or something along those lines.
