This is not surprising at all.  Especially once I saw it wasn the x86_64 
ports that were being compared.  With x86_64 we are not optimizing any 
more than any other x86_64 distribution.  In fact, our CFLAGS and 
LDFLAGS are quite conservative so we may be optimizing less.

Even our "i686" optimization is not news-worthy these days. Fedora is 
i686 optimized.  Although I think Ubunutu is still i486 (glibc killed 
off i386 support).  So there may have been a difference on the 32 bit 
install.

Optimization is not a selling point for Arch anymore.
