I have the following lines in my xinitrc and it works in uxterm.

export XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"
export GTK_IM_MODULE="xim"
export QT_IM_MODULE="xim"
export LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
export XIM_PROGRAM="scim -d"
scim -d
