Some of the latest changes are not documented in the NEWS file: I
think the changes in build and dependencies could be mentioned there.

Also, the usage has changed since the last commit "renamed an option",
or at least made the old one deprecated. I think an announce should be
made somewhere, or at least, it should appear in some NEWS or release
notes.
